New Horizons Un-Limited Inc.The New Mexico State Legislature ended its 30-day session with the passage of the Money Follows the Person (MFP) Act, a bill that provides people with disabilities, both young and old, an opportunity to move from an institution-like setting to a community-based setting. The passage comes just days after the Federal legislation was signed into law by President Bush on February 15, 2006. The bill allows money that would have been used to pay for institutional care to instead be used for community care. Because the money, which had already been budgeted, simply follows the person from one setting to another, this bill will not cost the State any additional service money. This is a huge victory that has been in the making for years thanks to the many tireless advocates that have pushed this legislation.
The bill is awaiting final approval from Governor Richardson. For more information on this bill, contact CLIC co-chair Michael Murphy at (505) 439-1112.
Update: Governor Richardson signed the New Mexico Money Follows the Person Bill on March 8, 2006, officially providing New Mexicans with disabilities real choice when it comes to their long term care decisions!
