A report issued last month by the State Legislative Fiscal Bureau predicts a large budget shortfall for Wisconsin's Medicaid (MA) budget. According the the report, it could be as much as $400 million. If nothing is done to restore the budget, MA will run out of money in April 2005, leaving many low-income people with disabilities and senior citizens without health insurance. MA pays for health care, medicine, therapies and long-term care, including community care. The shortfall has developed because there has been an increase in people using the program. Also Wisconsin has not received federal money that it has been counting on. This budget problem could become a healthcare crisis if nothing is done.
Action Steps:
This legislative session ends Thursday, March 11, 2004. If you care about MA and want to see it continue in its present form, please contact the Governor and your legislators immediately. Let them know that you want the MA budget shortfall fixed without cutting services, eligibility for services and cutting rates to providers of service.
