NHU Disability
Awareness and Advocacy!
Transition
Assistance: Student Disability Mentoring
Day
New Horizons Un-Limited
has renewed its commitment to improve greater public awareness and advocacy for
members of our community with disabilities.
In our present economy,
finding employment is a challenge for anyone!
For students with disabilities
finding employment may be impossible
without transition
assistance.
This summer the
Wisconsin Legislature passed laws reducing learning needs specialists in the
schools and transition services for students with disabilities.
Transition services
that prepare youth to move from a sheltered school environment to an
independent work environment are critical assistance throughout the development
and the education of students with special needs. Without developmental services in the schools
and transitional services, students with disabilities, as they reach employment
age, will not be prepared to become contributing members of society and will
therefore have to rely on state aid into adulthood. Many of these individuals will not be
equipped with the important life skills needed to live independently in the
community and could therefore fall into costly institutional care, only
exacerbating the financial costs of the state.
Without learning
needs specialists in the schools, children with less severe disabilities that
would have had developmental assistance in the past will go unidentified and
will also be greatly hampered in education and fail to transition to
employment, therefore creating more individuals exacerbating the financial
costs of the state.

Student Disability Mentoring Day)
This
fall NHU partnered with IndependenceFirst and Miller Engineering ITG Inc. for
Disability Mentoring Day.
NHU has offered
opportunities for young adults with or without disabilities to learn office
skills and computer refurbishing skills through volunteer positions at our
office. We have offered employment
training workshops, student internships through area colleges, universities,
technical schools and transition employment agencies, and assistance filling
out employment applications on-line.
In 2012 New Horizons
Un-Limited will continue to work to:
·
Promote
the development of building natural supports and good expectations.
·
Promote
secure gainful employment for students with disabilities.
·
Promote
the employability of students with disabilities to employers.
·
Promote
telecommuting as a viable/beneficial option for employers.
·
Focus
on other basic needs required to become a contributing, employed member of
society such as education, transportation and communication.
Our work at New
Horizons Un-Limited and our partners includes providing transition and
employment information and resources for students with disabilities and their
parents. Please share the information from our Life Planning Transition section on our website at www.new-horizons.org/rsclif.html

Improving Tech Skills toward Employment
We would like to thank all our 2011
computer refurbishing volunteers: Fred,
Barry, Roslyn, David, and Lavall who volunteered to improve their skills and
gain experience.
Our Access Technology volunteers
worked very hard this year to refurbish, clean and distribute used computers to
individuals with disabilities. In
addition, our volunteers continued to support our NHU Computer Helpdesk offering computer support via phone or repair
to our over 700 computer recipients. We
are extending the lives of the computers through repairs, upgrades and daily
phone support. Over 40 computer
recipients received computer repair services this year.
Please let us know if you are
interested in volunteering for computer refurbishing, setup or helpdesk. For more information on our Access Technology
Computer Grant Program, visit our website at:
