NHU Disability Awareness and Avocacy!

New Horizons Un-Limited has renewed its commitment to improve greater public awareness and advocacy for members of our community with disabilities.

With the Recent Changes to Wisconsin State Voting Requirements

Access becomes Imperative for People with Disabilities

This summer the Wisconsin Legislature passed the most restrictive voting regulations for people with disabilities in the United States.  The legislation would not be as restrictive if Wisconsin prior to this legislation had not limited support of the Department of Transportation Service Centers (fewer available centers and hours of operation) and Public Transit systems which enable people with disabilities to access service centers to obtain the required Wisconsin Voter ID.  In addition, those who have used the absentee ballot for voting because they were unable to physically get to the polls will now be required to send a copy of their photo ID with the absentee ballot.  Obtaining a voter photo ID and/or a copy to send will be a challenge for many who are shut in.

Can you always get to where you need to go?

For people with disabilities the answer to that question may be:  No!

Our work at New Horizons Un-Limited and our partners includes providing information and resources for the 1.1 million people with disabilities in our state to ensure that everyone may exercise their right to vote.

We have written a guide on the requirements under the revised Wisconsin Voting Law and what people can do to make sure they are prepared if they need to obtain the Wisconsin Voter ID, how to register to vote, what to expect at the polls and the new regulations on early or absentee voting.  Please share the information from our Wisconsin Voting Guide at www.new-horizons.org/gdwvot.html

New Horizons Un-Limited Advocacy Alert!

Both the U.S. and Wisconsin State budget plans will have significant impact on our citizens with disabilities.  Stay informed!
