New Horizons Un-Limited website

launches new Caregivers topic

New Horizons Un-Limited is founded on the principle of our community members impacted by disability sharing information.  Through our website on the Internet, our information resources and NHU Community Forum, people impacted by disability, their families and caregivers communicate with one another, share ideas and solutions, to conquer the problems they have been facing, too often alone, for many decades.

As we offer our programs to people with disabilities, we have met many caregivers.  They have contributed to New Horizons Un-Limited with their time, energy and have shared their insight in caring for people with disabilities.  This past year we have developed our new free resource to provide a comprehensive online support for individuals caring for a loved one with a disability.

When we are faced with life circumstances for which we need assistance, we turn to our support group:  our family, friends, neighbors and community.  As we reach out to these members of our community for assistance, advice, and ideas, we share information that we and others have used to solve similar problems.

NHU brings together information, resources, perspectives, experiences, for the family member; parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, sister, brother, friend or neighbor, or anyone who has taken the challenge to care for their loved one with a disability.  These unpaid caregivers can be full time or part time, and can live with the person being cared for or live separately.  The Family Caregiver Alliance estimates 29.2 million family caregivers provide personal assistance to adults (aged 18+) with a disability or chronic illness.

This new online resource offers help to those with the responsibility of caring for a loved one with a disability with information and resources on adaptive products, home care, meal planning and nutrition, and safety.  Visit our website Caregivers topic at www.new-horizons.org/givcat.html

Caregiving can result in time, energy, emotional, health and financial burdens for the caregiver.  Our Guide for Caregivers for People with Disabilities offers information on what it takes to be a caregiver, tips on how to be a good caregiver and offers a survival guide for taking care of you! Visit this caregiver guide at www.new-horizons.org/gdcgiv.html

Our Caregivers section will continue to grow as we further develop resources and articles on specific in-depth solutions for issues facing caregivers such as home safety and resources in one’s own community.

A Continued Success

More than 110 golfers soaked up the sun and took in the scenery during our 7th Annual Benefit Golf Outing at Hawk’s View Golf Club on Wednesday, June 9th.  Thanks to our many dedicated golfers and sponsors, our outing continues to be our premier annual fundraising event.

Our outing would not be possible without the support of Miller Engineering and its employees.  Thanks in large part to their efforts, our outing continues to attract new golfers and sponsors every year!

Thank You NHU Volunteers!

2010-golf outing 023

Thank you to our Benefit Golf Outing Volunteers who worked so hard these past months to plan this fundraising event, obtained raffle and silent auction prizes assembled golfer packets, and those who worked this event.  It is not too early to start now to speak to family and friends about next year’s New Horizon Un-Limited’s Benefit Golf Outing.  Consider the golfers in your life and let us know that we may include them in next year’s mailing.

Thank you to our July 3rd Benefit Volunteers who braved the crowds downtown to sell water and soda prior to the fireworks to benefit New Horizons Un-Limited.

Thank you to our Office and Clerical Volunteers who worked on our mailings for our Communicability, and Access Tech Tips newsletters.  Volunteers also helped with application packets and database entry.  Our office and clerical volunteers are very much appreciated!  Please let us know if you are interested in volunteering for our office and clerical staff.

Thank you to our Access Technology Volunteers who worked very hard this summer to refurbish, clean and distribute 15 used computers to individuals with disabilities.

In addition, our volunteers continued to support our NHU Computer Helpdesk for our computer recipients.  Over 20 computer recipients received computer support via our helpdesk and 10 computer recipients received computer repair services.  Please let us know if you are interested in volunteering for computer refurbishing, computer setup or our computer helpdesk.  For more information on our Access Technology, visit our website at www.newhorizons.org/accesstech/

Experiences – Perspectives

- Conversations

The following excerpt is written by a

parent caregiver of adult children with disabilities.

Time Poor

What is it like for disabled individuals

and their families to live in a world

which moves at a different pace,

a world that has different abilities

and different options?

What is it like to try to balance all these differences without any additional time beyond the same

24 hour day,

seven days a week, allotted to all?

A disabled child has extraordinary needs

which require a great deal of time.

More time is needed for many everyday things,

for example:  to dress, to eat, or to clean up.

……………………………………

One family has found it pays to be gentle with themselves, to not have super human expectations,

to know, at the end of each day,

they have done their best,

aware their best is often, not good enough,

but it is all there is,

and tomorrow, they can “begin again.”

We invite you to learn of this caregiver’s journey by visiting Conversations on Disability on our website at:  www.new-horizons.org/contim.html

July 2010

Nick (Nicholas J.) Weid

We are saddened by the loss of one of our very special volunteers, Nick Weid, who passed away July 18, 2010 at age 43 years.

Nick was an employee of Miller Engineering who never hesitated to volunteer for us or support our endeavors at New Horizons Un-Limited. He always lent a helping hand to assist with carrying and storing computers for our Computer Grant Program for people with disabilities and supported all our fundraising efforts.

Nick loved his children, family, friends, and life. He also had a great love of music, and enjoyed writing songs with his new band, Spider XXX. Our staff and volunteers will remember Nick fondly as he always had a humorous word for everyone and always helped our NHU volunteers feel very welcome.

Nick is lovingly remembered by his companion, children, father, sisters, brothers, and further survived by aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, other relatives and many friends. We offer our deepest sympathy to his family and also to his co-workers at Miller Engineering.

Nick's extended family and friends are planning a benefit for Saturday, September 18 starting at 1:00 PM, at On The Limiter, 3479 E. Plankinton, Cudahy, Wisconsin.  The benefit will feature a number of great local bands, vendors, and an auction to help raise money for Nick's family.
