Reaching
Out to Our Community
Collaboration
with Milwaukee Public Schools
Access Information Initiative
Sharing Information – Students Transition to Adulthood
When we are faced
with life circumstances for which we need assistance, we turn to our support
group: our family, friends, neighbors
and community. As we reach out to these
members of our community for assistance, advice, and ideas, we share
information that others have used to solve similar problems.
New
Horizons Un-Limited is founded on the principle of our community sharing
information. We believe, that if
given a proper forum and resources, people impacted by disability could
communicate with one another, share ideas and solutions, and ultimately,
together, conquer the problems they have been facing, too often alone, for many
decades.
This
past year we collaborated with Milwaukee Public Schools to share information
for students that are transitioning from school to the next step:
adulthood. So that our disabled students
and their families do not have to spend critical months, or even years lost in
bureaucracies and red tape, missing out on opportunities and benefits they so
rightfully deserve, we at
New Horizons Un-Limited have developed a segment of our website dedicated to
educating students who are disabled about the services and programs available
to them for transitioning from school to secondary education, employment or the
community.

Access Technology Initiative
Improving Computer Access, Providing Opportunity for
Students
Students with
disabilities can apply to the Milwaukee Public Schools for computers during
their student years, but what about students with disabilities that finish
school and are looking for employment or a start in life?
In an effort to serve
this group, we have worked with many agencies and secondary schools in the
Milwaukee area such as the Department of Vocational Rehabilitation, Alverno College, and PC Pro Schools to outreach to students
transitioning from school to the workforce or adulthood for a grant of a
Windows XP workstation. This year we
have recently outreached to the graduates of the Milwaukee Public Schools.

(Continued
from first page) Reaching Out to Our Community
Through this program, we accept used computers from companies and individuals, and recycle our in-kind donations of computer equipment to people with disabilities in our community and throughout the state. The equipment is repaired by volunteer technicians many of whom are students with disabilities who have assisted this program while learning skills and gaining experience for employment. In addition, we have mentored students who are disabled in administrative skills and computer technology.
We will continue this initiative in 2010 and beyond, focusing on students with mobility impairments and injuries that result in a physical disability. If you know of a student with a disability transitioning to adulthood that could benefit by having access to a computer in their home, please contact us.

Experiences – Perspectives
This past month, Mark Elzey requested to share
his blog, The Faces We Have Blog
on our website. He has written
about his life and his personal experiences with facial disfigurement after
contracting Polio Encephalitis as a very young child.
A few years ago as a
result of conversations with several people who are, like him, facially
disfigured, he began writing the story of his life. He started a blog in which
he has posted the entire book. Thousands of readers have visited the blog from
across the globe.
In Mark's own words,
"This project is simply my story, which is basically how I dealt with my
facial difference. In the end I’d like to have people read this and go away
with an understanding of what I have gone through. If the reader goes away with
a better understanding of what it’s like to have a disfigured face, I’ve done
my job. If the stories in this book help lighten the load, just a little, then
I’ve succeeded. If it made you think about how you react to people who are
different in any way and you try to understand those feelings, then I have
accomplished what I wanted. I wrote these stories because I don’t want people
to feel alone."
This is a very well
written book and definitely explains what it has been like living with physical
difference and demonstrates a great awareness of individual perspectives for
the person with a difference, parents, caregivers, professionals, and anyone
interested in the issues faced by people living with a physical difference.
We invite you to learn of this one man’s journey by visiting this
personal experience blog on our website at:

with New Community
Computer Lab
Thank you to our Access Technology volunteers who worked very hard
this spring to refurbish, clean and distribute 30 used computers to individuals
with disabilities and community organizations!
In March New Horizons Un-Limited granted this faith based
organization computer equipment for a computer lab for low income families with
members with disabilities and special needs.
The New Omega Baptist Church computer lab program will reach out to
people of all denominations offering counseling, skill building, and now
computer technology. Their mission for
the lab is to establish a bi-weekly class to serve the congregation and the
community to help individuals including those with disabilities to build the
necessary computer skills to be better able to help themselves and their
families and prepare them to live and work in our technological world.
In addition, our volunteers continued to support our
NHU Computer Helpdesk for our computer recipients. Please let us know if you are interested in volunteering
for computer refurbishing, computer setup or our computer helpdesk.

NHU Global Information
Village
This
summer we will publish a new section on our website the NHU Global Information
Village.
It is our mission, via our Global Information Village to provide individuals with lifelong disabilities, throughout the world, increased access to the information and resources that can empower them towards greater self-confidence, help them discover a sense of purpose, and enable them to seek out opportunities to improve their lives.
NHU will utilize a global
team of in-country volunteers to develop and maintain an online information
network that will:
·
Provide a country-by-country status of disabled
citizens to foster an environment for change within that country.
·
Highlight existing disability-related laws,
practices, and resources that are aimed at improving the status of disabled
citizens within each identified country.
·
Celebrate the efforts of individuals and
organizations working to improve the status of disabled citizens worldwide.
· Provide a network for advocacy and outreach among disabled citizens and
their supporters.
Do
you speak a foreign language and would like to volunteer for NHU to review
translations of the information on our Global Information Village. Much of the translation is done, however, we
could use your help to review and evaluate translations. Contact us if you are interested in this
volunteer opportunity. Look for this
exciting new development in next quarter’s NHU Outlook Newsletter.
