Reaching Out to Our Disabled Veterans

Access Information Initiative

Sharing Information, Providing Hope for Disabled Veterans

Thousands of young servicemen and women are coming face to face with the realities of disability.  What would have mortally wounded a soldier years ago, is now, with the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, leaving them with lifelong disabling conditions such as limb loss, brain injury, paralysis, and physical and emotional scars, among other debilitating injuries.  In a very real sense, disabled veterans, in giving others their freedom and independence, have lost their own.

As they recover and attempt to come to terms with their loss of freedom and independence as a disabled American, they are discharged by the government, and often, due to extremely limited resources, forgotten - left alone to struggle with this unknown world.

So that our newly disabled veterans and their families do not have to spend critical months, or even years lost in bureaucracies and red tape, missing out on opportunities and benefits they so rightfully deserve, we at New Horizons Un-Limited have developed a segment of our website dedicated to educating our disabled servicemen and woman about the services and programs available to them.

Check out our Disabled Veteran Support page by visiting www.new-horizons.org/cmtvet.html

At this time we have information on more than 50 programs that offer support on a national basis in areas such as:  Benefits Assistance, Employment, Financial Assistance, Home Ownership, Injury Specific Support, and Mental Wellness.

This past year, nearly 1400 veterans from across the United States, accessed this information via our website.  Based on visits from the first few weeks of January, it is expected that more than 3300 veterans will access this resource in 2010; a testament to the growing need for such a resource.

This coming year, we are hoping to double the content and resources available for disabled veterans.  Please contact us if you wish to help in further developing this much needed resource. (continued on page 2)

Access Technology Initiative

Improving Computer Access for Disabled Vets, Providing Opportunity

While much focus has been placed on newly disabled veterans, there remains a generation of veterans before them that have been struggling to improve their lives.

In an effort to serve this often forgotten about segment of Veterans, we have been working with the Milwaukee Veterans Administration to identify a slightly older generation of veterans that could benefit from computer literacy training and a grant of a Windows XP workstation.

Through this program, we accept used computers from companies and individuals, recycle our in-kind donations of computer equipment to people with disabilities in our community and throughout the state.  The equipment is repaired by volunteer technicians many of whom are students with disabilities who have assisted this program while learning skills and gaining experience for employment.

Over this past year we have provided training and a computer grant to approximately one dozen veterans, primarily with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

We hope to continue this initiative in 2010 and beyond, focusing on veterans with mobility impairments and injuries that result in a physical disability.

If you know of a disabled veteran that could benefit by having access to a computer in their home, please contact us.

Send e-mail to horizons@new-horizons.org

Experiences - Perspectives

To ensure that individuals with disabilities have opportunities for skills training and experience to pursue educational and employment goals, NHU provides office skills training and experience to job seekers with disabilities through our Employment Skill Development Program.

We invite you to learn of one man’s journey by visiting the personal experience of one of our job seekers on our website.  We hope we provide as much to our job seekers as they give to us!

NHU Remembers –2009

Kitti (Katherine) Dotzler

This past year one of our volunteer interns, Kitti (Katherine) Dotzler, passed away July 11, 2009 at 56.  Kitti served NHU as a student volunteer intern from Milwaukee Area Technical College Web Development Internship Program from October 2004 - June 2005. She assisted us with many of the technical and interactive areas of our website.  Kitti was an Alverno College graduate, and worked recently at WPS in Madison.  She was particularly devoted to our endeavors with people with disabilities and returned often to volunteer for NHU, hauling and cleaning computers, and assisting with website development.  She was a wife, a mother and a dear friend of New Horizons Un-Limited.  We miss Kitti, her joyful presence, organization, and dedication to detail.
