Arizona's Bridge to Independent Living (ABIL) and all other Independent Living Centers (ILCs) in Arizona are creating new SSA Benefits Counseling Teams. It is for individuals who are currently receiving SSI and/or SSDI and is made possible by recently awarded Benefits Counseling Grants from the Social Security Administration. All new benefits counselors hired by ILCs are receiving training from the Social Security Administration and will be certified. They will help individual's assess the effect of you choosing to go to work. According to ABIL, some of the work incentives that the Benefits Team will help consumers take advantage of include:
2) Consumers may wish to utilize Impairment-Related Work Expenses. These are disability-related work expenses that may be deducted from an individual's income from employment.
3) Another exciting incentive is the Plan for Achieving Self-Support known as a PASS. A PASS may be an option for those interested in self-employment, continuing education or adaptive equipment. The PASS is a separate account that must be approved by Social Security. It allows anyone eligible for SSI the opportunity to set money aside in order to achieve a specific career goal.
4) SSDI beneficiaries are entitled to a 9 month Trial Work Period (TWP). The TWP was created to allow individuals with disabilities a chance to test their work ability without losing benefits.
5) Further, the Extended Period of Eligibility (EPE) and "Easy Back on" make it possible for individuals who go to work and work their way off of SSI or SSDI benefits the ability to go back on benefits if they lose their job or their disability worsens.
6) Perhaps the most helpful work incentives, the "Medicaid Buy-in" and "Medicare extensions" may make it possible for persons with disabilities to keep their medical coverage once employed.
