New Sign May 31, 2006 - Class action suit seeking community services for people with developmental disabilities moves forward

On March 13, 2006, U.S. District Court Judge James Holderman granted class action status in a lawsuit that charges the State of Illinois is violating the civil rights of people with developmental disabilities by forcing them into large institutions. Despite a 1999 ruling by the Supreme Court that ruled unnecessary institutionalization violates the Americans with Disabilities Act, Illinois has not shifted funding to community-based services. Currently, illinois ranks 49th among states in its effort to place people with disabilities in small community settings. It is hope that this lawsuit will provide greater choice the the thousands of Illinois residents with disabilities.
