New Sign July 2005 - California Parks officials commit to better access for people with disabilities

Californians with disabilities can soon look forward to enjoying the beauty of California's state parks thanks to a landmark settlement in which the state of California has promised to make its state parks more accessible to people with disabilities. Everything from hiking trails to nature exhibits will be modified to ensure that anyone who wants to experience the outdoors can experience it without the barriers that now prevent them from doing so.

The state agreed to make tens of millions of dollars in repairs and modifications over the next 11 years. Along with providing accessible restrooms, campsites and programming, the settlement also calls for multiple accessible and braille labeled trails at state parks. All of the modifications will be made in an environmentally sound manner so not to disturb the natural habitat of the park's wildlife.
