February 2004 - Phoenix, Arizona - Phoenix wins N.O.D's Accessible America Award

Phoenix, Arizona has won the third annual Accessible America Contest, awarded by the National Organization on Disability (N.O.D.). The contest, which in 2003 considered applications from 63 other American cities, recognizes the efforts of those cities where citizens with disabilities have opportunities for full and equal participation in the life of their community, including access to education, jobs, voting, transportation, housing, religious worship, and a full range of social, recreational, cultural, and sports activities. As the 2003 winner Phoenix is being heralded as a model for its focus on disability issues and its successful design of programs, services and facilities that are accessible for citizens and visitors with disabilities. Phoenix is the nation's sixth largest city and according to the U.S. Census, more than 17 percent of the city's 1.3 million residents have a disability. The contest award of $25,000 can be used by Phoenix to recognize and encourage comprehensive disability accessibility and opportunity. February 2004 - Arizona - Alternative Transportation for Apache Junction

For adults with disabilities who live East of the Maricopa County line, in Pinal county, the lack of a public transportation system has been a barrier to employment, traveling to medical appointments, shopping and socialization, events others sometimes take for granted. ABIL staff, Mesa Senior Services staff and the City of Apache Junction leaders, have collaborated to offer qualifying residents of Apache Junction an alternative transportation system.

The Enabling Transportation (ET) Program is a mileage reimbursement program for persons who rely on their friends, neighbors and non-residing relatives for transportation. The program is for persons with disabilities who are unable to drive and do not have a car, are permanent residents of the City of Apache Junction, senior citizens 60 & over, and adults with disabilities who are 18 through 59 years of age.

Persons who qualify for the ET program choose their own volunteer driver, and then reimburse the driver for up to a maximum of 300 miles per calendar month. To apply for this program, call Mesa Senior Services at (480) 218-2221 and request an ET brochure packet which includes an eligibility application. These packets are also available at the Apache Junction Senior Center located at 1177 Idaho Road or visit Mesa Senior Services to email a request.
