November 2002 - Pennsylvania - Self-determination basis of Pennsylvania's innovative Transformation Project

Transformation Project is the beginning of a journey of responsible changes in Pennsylvania's Mental Retardation Service System that will result in higher quality services, more accountability and a stronger role of choice for families and people receiving services. The Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare Office of Mental Retardation (OMR) has drafted a Multi-Year Plan to overhaul the service system for those with Mental Retardation and their families. Under the new system, individuals may choose their service providers and the services that will best meet their needs. A personal service budget will also be coordinated. This system is rooted in the concept of self-determination, an idea that people with disabilities should have complete control over the decisions in their lives. For more information, visit the OMR website.
