Unleash your creativity! Very Special Arts (VSA) will be hosting an art class for adults with disabilities on Wednesdays, November 28, December 5, 12 & 19 from 10-11:30 a.m. at the Marian Center for Nonprofits, Rm 123, 3211 S. Lake Drive in St. Francis. Students will create their own, one-of-a-kind holiday themed art project. The class fee is $41 per student. The Coalition of Wisconsin Aging Groups (CWAG) will provide a free Family Care training event on Thursday, August 30, 2007 from 9:30am-3:00pm at the CWAG offices, 2850 Dairy Drive in Madison. The training will focus on options for long-term care for older people and people with disabilities through the implementation of the Family Care Program within Dane and Rock Counties. Participants will learn the current status of Family Care and what they can do to help shape it in Dane and Rock counties.

Milwaukee Summerfest has always provided services to assist people with disabilities. Last summer, Dorothy Fare, director of community relations at Milwaukee Center for Independence decided to help people be more aware of the services available to them. As part of the new Courtesy Vest Program, MCFI volunteers wore bright yellow vests and greeted visitors with special needs letting them know about the many accommodations offered to them at Summerfest. The MCFI Summerfest Courtesy Vest Program will continue for Summerfest 2007 and promises to be more welcoming to the special needs visitor, their families and caregivers.
The Milwaukee Center For Independence is offering week-long Adventures for L.I.F.E. camping experiences for young people with disabilities ages 12 to 30. Both sleep over and day camps are available. Day Camp will be held at Blue Lotus Farm and Retreat Center near Newburg, Wisconsin, with sessions scheduled from July 30th-August 3rd, August 6th-10th and a special session for young people with autism from August 13th-17th. Day camp registration costs $50, while the camp fee is $105. Sleep over camps, to be held at Friendship Center near Dodgeville, Wisconsin, are scheduled for the weeks of July 15th-20th, July 22nd-27th and August 26th-31st. This year's IndependenceFirst POWER LUNCH will be held on Thursday, June 14th, 2007 at the Midwest Airlines Center Ballroom. The event highlights the untapped potential of people with disabilities in the workplace, in the marketplace and throughout the community. Tony Award winning actor Ben Vereen will be this year’s featured guest speaker. As part of an energetic and informative program, Mr. Vereen will share how his near-fatal accident and stroke led to his successful living philosophy of spirituality and wellness. His experience is indicative of how disability can impact anyone.

Family Care is expanding throughout Wisconsin. One part of Family Care, Self-Directed Services or SDS, gives people an opportunity to choose their own care services. To educate Wisconsinites on this important aspect of Family care, the Self-Determination Wisconsin project is presenting a series of informational meetings. The meetings are for people who get long term care services, their families, service providers, advocates, and others who want to learn more about SDS.

The National Association on Mental Illness of Greater Milwaukee will be hosting their 2nd Annual Creativity Heals Art Gallery and Stage Show to showcase the talents of local mental health consumers. The event is scheduled for Sunday, May 6, 2007 between the hours of 3:00 and 5:30 p.m. at Bucketworks, 1319 N. Martin Luther King Drive in Milwaukee. The 19th Annual Wisconsin Conference on Brain Injury, "Confronting Challenges and Creating Community," is scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, May 1-2, 2007 at the Radisson Hotel and Convention Center and Casino in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Sponsored by the Fox Valley Sibling Support Network and NAMI Fox Valley, Appleton, the "Picture the Future" 2nd Annual Wisconsin Adult Sibling Conference will be held on Friday and Saturday, April 27-28, 2007 at the Radisson Paper Valley Hotel, 333 W. College Avenue in Appleton, Wisconsin. This conference is for adults who have siblings with disabilities, highlighting the needs and interests of people who have siblings with mental illness. There will also be special sessions and networking opportunities for grandparents of children with special needs and a training program for professionals and volunteers interested in facilitating future workshops for children who have siblings with disabilities. The annual Circles of Life Conference is the premiere Wisconsin conference related to families and disabilities. This year's conference will be held Thursday and Friday, April 26-27 at the Marriott Madison West, 1313 John Q. Hammons Drive in Middleton, Wisconsin. Sessions include: Creating a Vision and Plan for Your Child’s Future, IEP: The Process & Product, Self Determination, the Family System and Community Life, Benefits Counseling 101: Where to Go in Wisconsin, and many more. The Spotlight on Siblings weekend, held April 13-15, 2007, is especially designed for children ages 7-14 who have a sibling with special needs. Kids will have an opportunity to meet other kids who are experiencing the same joys and challenges of having a sibling with a disability. This fun, fast-paced weekend will offer a variety of activities, discussion sessions and team building challenges that will provide a place to be with others who understand. Many children with disabilities spend most of their free time with their brothers and sisters. So it is not surprising that siblings of children with disabilities want to talk with other kids about the ups and downs of their daily lives. The Wisconsin Rehabilitation Council (WRC) and the Department of Workforce Development (DWD) will hold two public hearings regarding the State Plan for Vocational Rehabilitation Services. Citizen comment is also sought on the needs and priorities for vocational training and employment of persons with disabilities.
Both hearings will be held on Wednesday, March 21, 2007 from 5:00pm to 7:00pm. One will be located at the Madison Public Library, 201 W. Mifflin Street, Room #204 in Madison. The other will be at the American Club, Highland Avenue, Sturgeon Bay Room in Kohler. The State Superintendent's Council on Special Education will hold a public forum to obtain comments on special education in Wisconsin on Wednesday, March 14, 2007 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Racine Marriott, located at 7111 West Washington Avenue in Racine. Information gathered at the forum will be used by the Council in advising the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) on matters affecting the education of Wisconsin's youth with disabilities. In particular the Council is interested in gathering comment on the following topics; however any topic can be addressed.
The Fox Valley Sibling Support Network will be hosting several SibShops this Winter and Spring. Following are the dates and description for each event:
Art Sibshop, February 10, 2007, 10 a.m.-1 p.m., Paper Discovery Center - 425 W. Water Street in Appleton
This workshop is designed for children ages 6-12 who have siblings with special needs. Children will create paper Valentines while making friends with other children who share their concerns and joys. Cost: $3 per child.
Mid-Winter TEEN Sibling Event, February 10, 2007 - 2:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. - Harmony Cafe in Appleton
Teenagers who have siblings with special needs or long-term illnesses are invited to a very special event with one of the nation's top speakers with youth, Bob Lenz. Bob himself has a sibling with disabilities and will share his personal experiences in a touching and often funny presentation. Funded by Thrivent Financial Bank, this event is FREE for teens and young adults, but a ticket is required.
Fun with Family and Furry Friends - March 22, 2007 - 5:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. - The Susan Schuster Pet Resource Center- N115 Two Mile Road in Appleton
Join other siblings and their families for a family night hosted by the Fox Valley Sibling Support Network (FVSSN), The Arc Fox Cities and the Fox Valley Humane Association. Enjoy pizza, games, crafts and visiting with animals. The event is FREE, but reservations are required.

The Milwaukee Center for Independence will be hosting a six-session workshop on friendship. They will discuss easy steps you can take to meet new people and help them see what a wonderful person you are! You will learn interpersonal skills, including: greeting others, listening, holding conversations, offering help, and keeping friends. You will also learn coping skills, including what you can do about: feeling left out, negotiating with others, peer pressure and expressing anger. The workshop will take place on Wednesdays from 6-7 p.m. February 7, 14, 21, 28 & March 7 & 14 at the MCFI campus at 2020 W. Wells Street in Milwaukee.
