July 13 & 16, 2006 - Live at Schwartz events for those with Multiple Sclerosis, Autism

Harry W. Schwartz Bookstore hosts Live at Schwartz, events that bring authors and book lovers together in an intimate setting. This July, the bookstore is welcoming two authors that will share their experiences with disability. Each of the following events are free and open to the public.

Facing the Cognitive Challenges of Multiple Sclerosis
Author Jeffrey Gingold
Thursday, July 13th • 7pm talk
2559 North Downer Avenue, Milwaukee

When Jeffrey Gingold "misplaced his wife on the living room couch" and became lost while driving just blocks from his home, little did he know it was an effect of MS. The "thinking" disability of multiple sclerosis affects many people with the disease, who do not realize this invisible symptom--which disconnects mental pathways in the brain--is the cause of their confusion. Here, he documents his struggle, bringing a too-often hidden disability into the open.

Sundays with Matthew
Sunday, July 16th • 2pm program
4093 North Oakland Avenue, Shorewood

Join Matthew, a teen with autism, and his artist friend Jeanette as they share their sketchbook drawings about being nice, helping out, tone of voice, things they like, and more. Jeanette met Matthew through the Wisconsin Early Autism Program (WEAP) in Milwaukee. Now no longer working for WEAP, Jeannette decided to stay on with Matthew once a week--on Sundays. Once free from guidelines, Jeanette started her own art therapy program with Matthew. Excerpts from real sketchbooks show what topics Jeanette is working on with Matthew, like encouragement and looking past differences.
