2004 - Milwaukee, Wisconsin - Homeowner Peer Group seeking homeowners with disabilities

Independence First offers a quarterly Homeowner Peer Group for homeowners with disabilities or homeowners who have a household member with a disability. The group discusses seasonal maintenance and offers an opportunity to network with other homeowners and to learn from each other's homeownership experiences. 2004 meetings are scheduled on the following Wednesdays, June 9, September 8, and December 8, from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. For more information, please call (414) 291-7520.


November 13, 2004 - St. Francis, Wisconsin - Art Gallery to feature works from artists with disabilities

The Art Gallery, located at 3211 S. Lake Drive in St. Francis, Wisconsin, invites you to view works of art from local artists with and without disabilities on Saturday, November 13, 2004 from noon until 3 p.m. Works are available for purchase. For more information, call (414) 483-2430.


October 15-16, 2004 - Appleton, Wisconsin - Wisconsin Self-Help for Hard of Hearing People State Conference

On Friday and Saturday, October 15 and 16, 2004, the Wisconsin chapter of Self-Help for Hard of Hearing People will be holding an informative conference in Appleton, Wisconsin. An informal social event will be held on Friday, while an all day workshop will be held on Saturday. The conference is open to people of all ages. September 23-25, 2004 - Racine, Wisconsin - ARC-Wisconsin 2004 State Conference

The ARC of Racine is hosting the ARC-Wisconsin 2004 State Conference on Friday and Saturday, September 24th and 25th at the Racine Marriot. The conference will discuss the most pressing disability issues, offer motivational programs and speakers, self-advocacy training, numerous exhibits and much more. More specifically "Breakout Sessions" include Dating Skills for Self Advocates, Discovering the Hidden Web, Voting Rights for People with Disabilities, Travel and Vacation Opportunities, Improving the Doctor-Patient Relationship, Transition and many more. On Friday the 24th there will also be a "Dancing to the Oldies" dance party from 8 p.m. until 11 p.m. Self-advocates, parents, siblings, and other family members are all encouraged to attend. Registration costs $65 for self advocates and $85 for individuals. There is a special rate of $120 for any two adults registering together. The registration deadline is September 1, 2004. New Sign September 21, 2004 - Milwaukee, Wisconsin - Voting Workshop

The Wisconsin Council on Developmental Disabilities (WCDD), in collaboration with the Wisconsin Coalition for Advocacy (WCA), will be holding a Voting Workshop in Milwaukee on Tuesday, September 21, 2004 at the Tommy G. Thompson Youth Center at State Fair Park, (Enter Gate 5 at the corner of 84th and Schlinger). Participants will get hands on experience with a number of "get-out-the-vote” techniques. Experts will also discuss voting rights and barriers to voting for people with disabilities and share important information on the laws, your rights and how to make sure every vote counts this November. The registration fee is $10. You must register by September 10, 2004. If registering after the RSVP deadline, please do so by phone, fax, or email. September 17, 2004 - Racine, Wisconsin - Arts and Abilities Event

Society's Assests, the Independent Living Center in Racine / Kenosha, will be hosting the Arts and Abilities Event on Friday, September 17th. As part of this event, the two-woman integrated dance company, Light Motion will perform. Light Motion uses the wheelchair as an expression of movement and works towards "helping people with disabilities discover the untapped, unexplored world of dance and artistic movement." The event will also feature other examples of artistic creativity including music, poetry and visual arts. September 13-17, 2004 - Adventures for L.I.F.E. Camp

Milwaukee Center for Independence (MCFI) will be hosting their Adventures for L.I.F.E. camp at the Friendship Center in Dodgeville for people with developmental disabilities aged 16 or older. Learning to handle your own kayak, fixing your coffee over an open fire, hooking that prized fish, and sleeping under the stars are some of the activities waiting for you at camp. There is one remaining 2004 camp session scheduled for September 13-September 17. The registration fee is $50 and includes transportation from and back to a central point in Milwaukee. August 21-22, 2004 - Chippewa Valley Fishing Excursion

On the third weekend of August, the 21-22, 2004, the Chippewa Valley chapter of Fishing Has No Boundaries will be holding their fifth annual accessible fishing event at Paradise Shores on beautiful Lake Holcombe, a premier fishing lake in Northern Wisconsin. Any person with a disability is eligible to participate in this event, regardless of type of disability, age, race, gender, state of residence or any other factor. Life vests, adaptive fishing equipment and bait are available. The cost is $60 per participant, $35 per attendant. July 31-August 6, 2004 - Wisconsin Dells - With a Little Help Summer Camp

"With A Little Help…", Inc. will be offering their annual week-long summer camp to adults with Muscular Dystrophy and similar disabilities July 31 through August 6, 2004 at Camp Wawbeek in Wisconsin Dells. The camp is unique in that it offers one-on-one assistance by trained volunteer attendants 24-hours a day, or as needed. Camp activites include adaptive sports, including football, hockey and baseball, trail rides, arts and crafts, treasure hunts and much more. June 27-July 2, 2004 - Whitewater, Wisconsin - 2nd Annual Transition Summer Camp

University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Center for Students with Disabilities is hosting their 2nd Annual Transition Summer Camp Sunday, June 27, through Friday, July 2, 2004. The week-long camp, geared towards high school students with disabilities, will focus on transitioning from high school to adult life. Discussion topics include careers, entrance into college, self-advocacy, vocational rehabilitation and much more. Participants will leave with a career plan, knoweldge of disability rights and self-determination, and hopefully a few new friends. The camp costs $500 per student. May 3 - 4, 2004 - Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin - 16th Annual Wisconsin Conference on Brain Injury - "Going the Distance: Pursuing A Quality Life"

Brain Injury Association of Wisconsin will be hosting their 16th Annual Wisconsin Conference on Brain Injury on Monday and Tuesday, May 3-4, 2004 at the Kalahari Resort in Wisconsin Dells. Topics of discussion will include Brain Injury Basics, Sexuality After Brain Injury, Visual Dysfunction Following Traumatic Brain Injury, Sleep Disturbance After Brain Injury, Employment Discrimination, and many others. They will also feature a panel of individuals affected by brain injury who will share their insight. Conference registration is $110 for association members and $140 for non-members. April 24, 2004 - Milwaukee, Wisconsin - Transitions: Reaching for Tomorrow

The Children's Hospital of Wisconsin, the Special Needs Family Center and the Waisman Center of UW-Madison present Transitions: Reaching for Tomorrow, a conference targeting youth with special health care needs and their families. This conference will discuss important transitioning strategies in the areas of education, health care, and community planning. The conference will feature professionals as well as a panel of youth who will discuss their own transition challenges and successes. The conference is scheduled for Saturday, April 24, 2004 from 9:00 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. at the Italian Conference Center located at 631 East Chicago Street in Milwaukee. March 31 - April 2, 2004 - Kohler, Wisconsin - 2004 WI Rehabilitation & Transition Conference - "Heroes Among Us - Above & Beyond"

Rehabilitation For Wisconsin, Inc. is hosting the 2004 Wisconsin Rehabilitation and Transition Conference on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, March 31 - April 2, 2004 at The American Club in Kohler, Wisconsin. This conference is "the premier annual gathering of service providers, educators, and government staff concerned with improving opportunities and inclusion for adults and students with disabilities." March 13, 2004 - West Allis, Wisconsin - Advocacy training - "How to be an Effective Advocate"

On Saturday, March 13, 2004 the Wisconsin Coalition for Advocacy (WCA), in conjunction with the Brain Injury Association of Wisconsin (BIAW), will provide training on advocacy at the Wisconsin State Fair Park's Youth Center in West Allis, Wisconsin. The training is open to residents of all areas of Central and Eastern Wisconsin. Though the training is aimed at people with traumatic brain injury and their families, others are encouraged to attend. Topics will include education and effective communication, employment discrimination, and advocacy for legislative change. The training will cost $20, including lunch and snacks.
