New Sign November 1, 2008 - Milwaukee, Wisconsin - 2nd Annual Caring for the Caregiver Conference

Plan to attend the FREE Caring for the Caregiver: Rafting the Burnout Rapids Conference on Saturday, November 1, 2008, from 10:30 am - 3:30 pm at the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE), 1025 N. Broadway in Milwaukee. The conference will feature sessions on legal & financial issues, dealing with difficult people, dealing with grief, coping strategies, laughter therapy, safety and wellness, assertive advocacy, and living options, among others. New Sign October 2008 - Milwaukee, Wisconsin - Tap the Potential Art Exhibit

Artists with disabilities address stereotypes in their artistic works throughout October as part of Milwaukee County’s Tap the Potential celebration of the talent and vision of individuals with disabilities. Artwork will be on display at the General Mitchell International Airport through October 31st as well as at Milwaukee City Hall, October 20-31. A "kick-off" performance by the “Guerilla Artist Strike Force” will take place at 11 am on Wednesday, October 8th at the south end of General Mitchell International Airport's main concourse.


New Sign October 15, 2008 - Milwaukee, Wisconsin - The Language of Taxes - a free educational workshop

On Wednesday, October 15, 2008, from 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm, Easter Seals Southeast Wisconsin will be hosting a free tax workshop at their Education & Advocacy Center, 1016 Milwaukee Avenue, 3rd Floor in South Milwaukee. New Sign October 3, 2008 - Milwaukee, Wisconsin - State Candidate Forum

There will be an October 3rd candidate forum at Washington Park Senior Center inMilwaukee from 12pm-3pm. The forum is sponsored by Disability Rights Wisconsin, Independence First, and ARC Milwaukee. It's a great chance to educate the candidates for the state legislature about our issues and will include questions about Family Care, transportation, and other issues of interest to you - and to give consumers a chance to get involved. The forum will also include information about the Milwaukee County advisory referendum which will be on the ballot in November - county supervisors Pat Jursik and Joe Rice will be the speakers. They are especially interested in having participation from the 8th Senate district (north shore suburbs, Mequon, Menomonee Falls, etc.) and 21st Assembly district (South Milwaukee, Oak Creek). The November 4th advisory referendum reads: "Shall the State of Wisconsin grant Milwaukee County the authority to provide property tax relief of at least sixty-five million dollars ($65 million) by levying a one percent (1%) county sales and use tax to be used to remove the following three items from the property tax levy: parks recreation culture, transit, and emergency medical services (EMS)?

The Wisconsin Board for People with Developmental Disabilities (BPDD) and The Adaptive Community Approach Program (ACAP) are sponsoring a Voter Education/Registration Training. Summer 2008 - Wisconsin - Family Care Training Sessions

Wisconsin's Long Term Care system, which helps many residents pay for services that help them with activities of daily living and the management of their health, is changing. A major part of the new system will be Family Care; a program that will cover such services as personal care, housekeeping and nursing. So that you may lean more about the choices available under Family Care, the Survival Coalition of Wisconsin Disability Organizations will be holding a series of training sessions throughout the state. Via these sessions, consumers will learn how to make informed choices about the services and supports they need to continue to live in their communities. August 15-17 2008 - Rosholt, Wisconsin - Family Learning Vacation for deaf and hard of hearing

Don’t miss this wonderful opportunity to meet and spend time with families with deaf or hard of hearing children from all over the state. At Family Learning Vacation, you’ll enjoy a weekend of fun, friendship and interesting workshops. Share experiences, participate in informative programs and have a great time exploring the beautiful Wisconsin Lions Camp, located near Stevens Point, which features 400 acres of forests, trails, native wildlife and a private lake — the perfect setting for a family vacation. The Learning Vacation will be held Friday, August 15 through Sunday, August 17, 2008. August 9, 2008 - Milwaukee, Wisconsin - Friends of Hank Aaron State Trail - 9th Annual Run/Walk

Honoring “Hammerin' Hank,” whose major league career started with the Milwaukee Braves, the Hank Aaron State Trail covers seven miles through the Menomonee Valley, linking Lake Michigan to Miller Park and is completely paved and accessible.

In addition to providing recreational and educational opportunities, the trail serves as a commuting corridor between downtown Milwaukee and the western side of the city. Over the next few years, the trail will be extended 5 ½ miles via a former railway corridor beginning near Miller Park and connect to the oak leaf trail at the Milwaukee/Waukesha county line.

Come and explore this exciting accessible urban trail on Saturday, August 9, 2008, starting at 8:30AM for a 5 k run/walk. You may even meet Hank Aaron himself, as he is expected to attend. The starting of the event is at Miller Park (near Klement's Sausage Haus). The fee for individuals is $17.00 through 8/2/08 ($20 after 8/2; $22 on race day). For teams: $19 (additional $2 covers cost of team logo on t-shirt). Team Logo cutoff is 7/23/08, with a minimum of 8 entrants per team. 2007 awards featured Midwest Airline Tickets and sails on a Great Lake Schooner. All participants receive a t-shirt, goodie bag and beverages.

July 6-11, 2008 - AVA Camp provides education, fun to youth using communications devices

Authentic Voices of America offers a weeklong residential camp at the University of Wisconsin Whitewater to young people who use communication devices. Created by an individual with Cerebral Palsy, this camp is like no other. Aside from typical camp activities, staff will teach campers how to effectively use their communication devices in a variety of real-world settings. The over-arching goal of this camp is to offer participants an opportunity to have fun, gain greater awareness of their abilities, and build their independence and self-confidence. Designed for young people (aged 12-21) that have potential for post-secondary education or job training, this year's camp will be held July 6-11 on the UW-Whitewater Campus, ranked among the best accessible campuses in the nation. May 24, 2008 - Milwaukee, Wisconsin - Running for Hope to all Nations

The entry fees are as follows: Adults for Pre-Race is $17.00 with $20 the Day of the Race, Children (under 18), for Pre-Race will be $12 and the Day of the Race will be $15, and for Families Pre-Race the fee is $45 and on the Day of the Race will be $50.

Participants will receive the Running For Hope Package (t-shirt, race number, pins, map and RFH booklet) at registration, at the event. Registration starts 8:30-9:45am with the beginning of the 5k run at 10:00AM, the 3k walk starts at 10:03AM. The Celebration and Awards will be at 11:00AM and the end of the event will be at 11:30AM.

April 2008 - New Horizons Un-Limited Invites You! - Newly Constructed Accessible Cabins Dedications and Openings - Wisconsin State Parks

The following newly constructed Accessible Cabins will be free and open to the public for their Open House. For each Open House, check in at their Park Office, let them know you are there for the Accessible Cabin Open House and they will grant you a day pass. Tour the new accessible cabins! Explore the new accessible paths! Join us for the dedications and refreshments!

If there are more than 30 people in your party, please rsvp to the individual State Park listed below before their Open House. Be sure to dress appropriate for the state park and the weather, as activities will be outdoors and grounds can be wet in April.
