2005 - Phoenix, Arizona - Independent Living Skills Workshops
The Arizona Bridge to Independent Living (ABIL) will be hosting a series of monthly Independent Living Workshops that will teach skills to help you become independent in your life. Come learn such skills as budgeting, shopping, cooking, self-esteem, motivational and organizational. Following is the schedule of workshops:

August 24, 2005 - Phoenix, Arizona - Get to know the Social Security process
The Arizona Bridge to Independent Living (ABIL) will be hosting an information session on the Social Security application and appeal process. Guest Speaker Joel F. Friedman, a Phoenix attorney who has been representing Social Security claimants in Phoenix since 1982, will provide a broad overview of the main Social Security disability programs [Disability Insurance Benefits (DIB), Disabled Child’s Benefits (DCB), and Supplemental Security Income (SSI)]. This session will focus on the medical and vocational standards required to qualify; what type of evidence is generally necessary to win a claim when a disability is not apparent; and the procedural steps involved in pursuing a Social Security claim. 2005 - Phoenix, Arizona - Support Group & Counseling for Families of Adults Diagnosed with a Mental Disorder
The Presbyterian Service Agency, located in Phoenix, Arizona will be hosting FREE support groups for adults with Mental Disorders. The groups are separated into four, 4-week Modules.
MODULE I: Mental Illness: Descriptions, prognosis, symptoms, and medications. You will learn the basics regarding Psychotic Disorders and Schizophrenia, Mood Disorders such as Depression and Bipolar Disorder, Anxiety Disorders, Co-occurring issues, and other mental illnesses.
MODULE II: Living with your family member: Effective communication, problem-solving, and boundary-setting/enforcement; and how to handle difficult symptoms such as depression, anger, anxiety, violence, and crisis.
MODULE III: Managing YOU: Taking care of yourself; taking personal time; dealing with your difficult emotions such as frustration, guilt, sadness, and embarrassment; stress management and relief; managing burnout and exhaustion; grief; and building support
MODULE IV: Maneuvering: Other peoples' reactions, including your own family; dealing with stigmas; building support; rights and responsibilities; dealing with the "system"
Each module is two hours long and meets for four weeks. All modules are free and available on an ongoing basis. Pre-registration is preferred, but not required; you can register at the door at the first meeting of each module. May 24 & 26, 2005 - Phoenix and Mesa, Arizona - Laughter Therapy
The Arizona Bridge to Independent Living is offering two Laughter Therapy groups with Caroline White from "Theatre 168." The first session is scheduled for Tuesday, May 24th, 11:30 - 1:00 pm at the ABIL Mesa Office, 2150 S. Country Club Dr., Suite #10
The second session is scheduled for Thursday, May 26th, 11:30 - 1:00 pm at the ABIL Phoenix office. The cost to participate is $5.00 including pizza. To reserve your space, send in the $5 fee to Andrea Reynoso, in ABIL's Mesa office, 2150 S. Country Club #10 Mesa, AZ 85210 or call (800) 280-2245(V/TTY). Space is limited to 15 people at each event. Laughter therapy is a healthy, non-ridiculing and connecting way to spend time with others. Laughter provides physiological, psychological and spiritual benefits, you probably never realized or imagined. During these two sessions they will:
Add laughter to familiar movements, creating exercise.
Teach and incorporate the benefits of breathing.
Address monthly birthdays
Learn daily practices to prevent hardening of attitudes.
End with affirmations.
Offer time to socialize and eat pizza.
May 13 & 14, 2005 - Bartlett Lake, Arizona - Annual Day at the Lake for People with Disabilities
The Barrow Neurological Institute is sponsoring their Annual Day at the Lake on Bartlett Lake Friday and Saturuday, May 13-14, 2005. People with neurological impairments, their friends and families are invited to participate in free water skiing, jet skiing, fishing, rowing, kayaking and boat rides. Registration is limited and individuals must be 8 years or older to participate. Participants are responsible for their own food and beverages and are encouraged to bring a cooler of refreshments, towels and sunblock. Recommended clothing includes swim wear, clothing for sun protection, sunglasses and a hat. To register, please call the Barrow Neurological Institute Recreation Therapy department at (602) 406-3606.
March 9, 2005 - Arizona Legislative Awareness Day
Mark your calendars! The Governor's Council on Developmental Disabilities will host its annual Legislative Awareness Day on March 9, 2005 from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at Wesley Bolin Plaza, located across from the state Capitol. The event will feature a luncheon and presentations on important public policy issues by a number of individuals with disabilities and family members. In the morning there will also be a workshop on future legislative issues as well as an overview on how the legislature works. You are also encouraged to see the process in motion and stay for afternoon legislative committee meetings. For more information, please call (800) 280-2245.
January 13, 2005 - Phoenix, Arizona - Innovative Mobility Presentation
You are invited to attend the Innovative Mobility presentation on Thursday, January 13, 2005 from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. During this presentation you will learn more about the possibilities of driving with a disability from Jenny Nordine, Occupational Therapist and Certified Driver Rehabilitation Specialist, of Driving to Independence and Daniel Wallace of Innovative Mobility.
