J.M. Kohler-Terry Andrae State Parks Accessible Cabin!

The 6th accessible cabin opened in the Wisconsin State Parks at J.M. Kohler-Terry Andrae State Parks near Sheboygan, Wisconsin this past year.

Here are some of the comments from people who have visited the park and stayed at this new accessible accommodation:

New Horizons Un-Limited collaborated with Miller Engineering Inc., Strass-Maguire and Associates Inc., architects, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the Friends of Kohler-Andrae State Parks to coordinate accessibility issues and the design with the State of Wisconsin for an accessible cabin for people with disabilities.

For an article on the cabin and the dedication and open house including pictures, click on the Kohler-Terry Andrae State Parks Accessible Cabin Press Release.

The cabin, which would be Wisconsin's State Parks 6th fully accessible cabin for people with disabilities and their families, has been built within the family campground of Kohler-Andrae State Parks by Friends of Kohler-Andrae State Park. Kohler-Andrae State Park "is one of the last natural preserves along the Lake Michigan shore and is the home of majestic sand dunes, miles of golden beach, shimmering blue water, whispering pines, an abundance of wildlife, and recreational activities for everyone." The park, which already features a specially designed campsite, rest room and shower facility for campers with physical disabilities, is an ideal location for an accessible cabin. For more information or a reservation application, call the park at (920) 451-4080 or go to the Wisconsin DNR

The 7th accessible cabin opened in the Wisconsin State Parks at Richard Bong State Recreation Area this past year.

Here are some of the comments from people who have visited the park and stayed at this new accessible accommodation.

We thank God for this cabin! What a blessing! We would buy it if we could! We live in Green Bay and have family in Kenosha so it’s a great location.
I have C.P. and I’m wheelchair bound. My husband and I have been to some of the other cabins too. This cabin is beautiful and very accessible. It met all our needs.
Thank you Nick & family & friends. You did a great job!
We will be back yearly!

P.S. Be joyful always.
Pray continuously
Give thanks in all circumstances.

Wow! Our family loves the outdoors and works hard to get out every chance we can. Before Brian’s spinal cord injury it was easy, but now we have to plan ahead or worry that our destination will be accessible. Nick’s Place is perfect.
Dave – thank you for sticking to your dream and working so hard to make this happen! Your hard work is giving so many people the opportunity to enjoy family, the outdoors and their independence. I hope that somehow, someday, the actions we take to make this world a better place come full circle and make your life a little better.

What a privilege to stay in such a wonderfully accessible cabin with my wheelchair. This is the first time I have been able to find a place I can really get around and do about everything………
Thank God for the dreams of other people, and the Kiwanis Club and all the good people who gave their time and money to make the dream come true.

New Horizons Un-Limited collaborated with Miller Engineering Inc., Strass-Maguire and Associates Inc., architects, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, the Richard Bong State Recreation Area, and the Kiwanis of Westosha-Salem to coordinate accessibility issues and the design with the State of Wisconsin for an accessible cabin for people with disabilities.

This cabin, which would be Wisconsin's State Parks 7th fully accessible cabin, for people with disabilities and their families, has been built within the Sunset Campground of Richard Bong State Recreational Area which is approximately 6 miles east from Burlington and 41 miles southwest of Milwaukee in Kenosha County. The Richard Bong State Recreation Area, although "located in the most populated part of Wisconsin feels like you are out in the middle of no-where." "A recreation area differs from a state park or forest in that it offers additional activities not traditionally found in state parks. Visitors may fly model airplanes, rockets, hang gliders, and hot air balloons. The recreation area encompasses 4,515 acres of rolling grassland, savanna, wetlands and scattered woodland, is open year-round and has 41.1 miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, horseback riding, snowshoeing, and dirt bike riding. The park, which already includes the following accessible features: an urban fishing pond, three hunting blinds, an observation platform at the wildlife refuge, five accessible campsites, and accessible picnic tables, buildings and most shelters," is an ideal location for an accessible cabin.

The accessible cabin features numerous accessible amenities, ensuring that all people with disabilities can freely use the cabin and the park's amenities without fear of hidden barriers. Features will include a fully accessible bathroom and kitchen and an accessible sleeping porch. All rooms will be large enough to allow for people in wheelchairs to move freely about the cabin from the entrance ramps, doorways, undercounter space and the roll-in shower. Furthermore, all fixtures and controls will be accessible, including the faucets, toilet, door and cabinet handles and light switches.

New Horizons Un-Limited has collaborated with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources' Accessibility Coordinator, Wisconsin Telephone Pioneers, Friends of High Cliff State Park, and Miller Engineering on the design of accessible cabins in the past for several Wisconsin State Parks. Accessible Cabin projects include cabins at High Cliff State Park on Lake Winnebago, Kettle Moraine State Forest - Southern Unit (Eagle, WI), and Mirror Lake State Park (Baraboo, WI).

The Wisconsin DNR, attributes the success of these projects to the residents of Wisconsin who, through their generous donation of funds, building plans, furniture, equipment, time and talent, have made the cabins a reality.

For an article on the cabin and the dedication and open house including pictures, click on the Richard Bong State Recreation Area Accessible Cabin Press Release. For more information or a reservation application, call the park at (262) 878-5600 or go to the Wisconsin DNR
