August 2007 - Finishes to be completed for Wisconsin's 6th Fully Accessible Cabin - for J.M.Kohler-Terry Andrae State Parks
The Kohler-Andrae Accessible Cabin can still benefit from your support! The cabin's interior work is mostly completed now, however, there is much to be done to complete interior finishes and exterior paving, landscaping, accessible deck, walkways and trails. This is great project to benefit people with disabilities in your community. This is a great project for a Boy Scout interested in a great Eagle project or a group that enjoys outdoor volunteer work. To find out how you can make this cabin a reality, please contact Fran Grandlic, President of Friends of Kohler-Andrae State Park, at (920) 451-4080.
New Horizons Un-Limited collaborated with Miller Engineering Inc., Strass-Maguire and Associates Inc., architects, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the Friends of
Kohler-Andrae State Parks to coordinate accessibility issues and the design with the State of Wisconsin for an accessible cabin
for people with disabilities for J.M Kohler and Terry Andrae State Parks near Sheboygan, Wisconsin.
The cabin, which would be Wisconsin's State Parks 6th fully accessible cabin for
people with disabilities and their families, has been built within the
family campground of Kohler-Andrae State Parks.
Kohler-Andrae State Park "is one of the last natural preserves along the
Lake Michigan shore and is the home of majestic sand dunes, miles of
golden beach, shimmering blue water, whispering pines, an abundance of
wildlife, and recreational activities for everyone." The park, which
already features a specially designed campsite, rest room and shower
facility for campers with physical disabilities, is an ideal location
for an accessible cabin.

New Horizons Un-Limited has collaborated with Miller Engineering Inc., Strass-Maguire and Associates Inc., architects, Wetosha-Salem Kiwanis, Richard Bong State Recreation Area and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to coordinate accessibility issues and the design with the State of Wisconsin for an accessible cabin
for people with disabilities near Burlington, Wisconsin.
This cabin, which would be Wisconsin's State Parks 7th fully accessible cabin, for
people with disabilities and their families, will be built within the
Sunset Campground of Richard Bong State Recreational Area which is approximately 6 miles east from Burlington and 41 miles southwest of Milwaukee in Kenosha County.
The Richard Bong State Recreation Area, although "located in the most populated part of Wisconsin feels like you are out in the middle of no-where." "A recreation area differs from a state park or forest in that it offers additional activities not traditionally found in state parks. Visitors may fly model airplanes, rockets, hang gliders, and hot air balloons. The recreation area encompasses 4,515 acres of rolling grassland, savanna, wetlands and scattered woodland, is open year-round and has 41.1 miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, horseback riding, snowshoeing, and dirt bike riding. The park, which already includes the following accessible features: an urban fishing pond, three hunting blinds, an observation platform at the wildlife refuge, five accessible campsites, and accessible picnic tables, buildings and most shelters," is an ideal location for an accessible cabin.
Plans for the accessible cabin will feature numerous accessible amenities, ensuring that all people with disabilities can freely use the cabin and the park's amenities without fear of hidden barriers. Features will include a fully accessible bathroom and kitchen and an accessible sleeping porch. All rooms will be large enough to allow for people in wheelchairs to move freely about the cabin from the entrance ramps, doorways, undercounter space and the roll-in shower. Furthermore, all fixtures and controls will be accessible, including the faucets, toilet, door and cabinet handles and light switches.
New Horizons Un-Limited has collaborated with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources' Accessibility Coordinator, Wisconsin Telephone Pioneers, Friends of High Cliff State Park, and Miller Engineering on the design of accessible cabins in the past for several Wisconsin State Parks. Accessible Cabin projects include cabins at High Cliff State Park on Lake Winnebago, Kettle Moraine State Forest - Southern Unit (Eagle, WI), and Mirror Lake State Park (Baraboo, WI).
The Wisconsin DNR, attributes the success of these projects to the residents of Wisconsin who, through their generous donation of funds, building plans, furniture, equipment, time and talent, have made the cabins a reality.
This cabin is in the stage of raising funds and is seeking your support. To find out more about this project and how to contribute, visit the Westosha-Salem Kiwanis Cabin for Disabled website.

In collaboration with New Horizons Un-Limited, the United Methodist Church of Whitefish Bay, 819 E. Silver Spring Drive will offer computer classes for people with disabilities over 18 years of age or their caregivers. Classes are offered at the church computer lab and are taught by volunteer instructors. While the church and computer lab are accessible, at this time, the computer lab can only offer the “Big Keys” assistive device or roller ball mouse. Students otherwise must be able to use a keyboard or mouse and read a computer screen. The classes are intended to provide educational development, social stimulation and personal growth experience and will move at a pace comfortable for the students. Starting Thursday, January 20th, "Introduction to the Internet" class will meet once a week for six weeks for a term fee of $30.00. Accommodation of people will depend on the space in class and availability of volunteer staff so apply early for special need s classes. For more information, please call the church at (414)964-2424 or write to UMC, 819 E. Silver Spring Drive, Whitefish Bay, WI 53217 or e-mail New Horizons Un-Limited at horizons@new-horizons.org. Ask for the people with disabilities computer class coordinator when calling.
Thanks to countless hours donated by our volunteer computer refurbishers and of course the computer donations from many, many caring individuals and businesses, we served a record number with our Computer Redistribution Program in 2006. More than 130 individuals with disabilities and their family members received a refurbished computer via our program in 2006. That is a 40% increase over last year.
While a seemingly simple tool, a computer has for many of our recipients proven to be the tool they needed to rediscover their self-confidence and pursue their personal goals. Since receiving training and a computer of their own, so many of our students and computer recipients have proclaimed, "I am so proud of myself…I had no idea I was capable of this."
From the artist that is learning how to create a digital library of her work, to the writer that has successfully submitted his editorials for publishing in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, to the student that is successfully preparing college-level essays, we have seen, first-hand, the accomplishments and pride made possible by their computers.
Of course, behind every success there stands a legion of individuals and businesses, without which we simply could not have accomplished all that we have this past year. While every contribution has added a great deal of value to our program, there are a few standout contributors this year that we would like to acknowledge.
Medical Associates, Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin
Roundy's Supermarkets, Milwaukee, Wisconsin
We simply cannot say thank you enough. These contributions have and will continue to make such a tremendous difference in the lives of those that receive computers via our program!

New Horizons Un-Limited Access Technology Program Grows by Leaps and Bounds in 2006

2006 New Horizons Un-Limited Volunteer Computer Refurbishers
Upon recently upgrading computers at their area offices, Medical Associates was in search of a home for their recently "retired" computers. Thanks to one of our dedicated golf outing sponsors, Good Electric, Medical Associates learned about our program and was impressed by its mission. In late October, with the help of Good Electric, we picked up more than 100 Pentium III Gateway desktop computers. We've already refurbished and distributed nearly 50 of these systems to applicants that may not have otherwise received a computer this year.
Our "next door neighbor" for several years now, we would often hustle past Roundy's with carts full of computers. Sam, the security guard at the time, took notice and extended the use of the loading zone in front of their building - a much-appreciated offering. Upon moving into Office Services, Sam recalled our program and suggested that Roundy's consider donating their recently retired PCs to our organization. After a little coordination, we eagerly accepted the donation of more than 40 Pentium III and IV Dell desktop computers in mid-December. We have already begun preliminary refurbishing and look forward to distributing these rather robust PCs in early 2007.
