at the Milwaukee Public Museum
September 2004 - Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Disabled Advisory Council Presents Recognition Awards
August 2004 - New Horizons Un-Limited participants experience The Quest for Immortality: Treasures of Ancient Egypt at the Milwaukee Public Museum
In the spirit of Columbus, set sail for the Milwaukee Public Museum on Monday, October 11, 2004. A special invitation is extended to Milwaukee County residents with disabilities, their families and friends to "discover" free fun, friendship, and facts experiencing a "Day without Boundaries" while touring the Museum's exhibits.
In addition to the Museum's permanent exhibits, between 10am and 2pm, you may also explore a number of artifacts by touch at various "Stop Spot" carts. Docent-guided tours of "The Streets of Old Milwaukee" will also allow touch tour, audio tour or text transcript tour for those people interested. Volunteers will be available to allow a maximum number of people to touch live insects in "Bugs Alive!" in the Butterfly Vivarium.
You are also welcome to explore the "Scenes of the Dinosaurs" special exhibit included in your free admission. To catch an IMAX film you must pay an additional charge and advanced reservations are recommended. Also when making your reservation, if you require wheelchair seating or other accommodation at IMAX, make sure it is available.
Between 10 and 2, register for door prize drawings at the Key Card table. Bring a lunch, or purchase one at the Museum's convenient concession area.
We at New Horizons Un-Limited would also like to invite you to visit our table in the Exploring Life on Earth exhibit on the First Floor, above the Concourse of the museum near the Peulicher Butterfly Wing. Patrons that stop by our table can explore how to find other interesting cultural and historical facts and pick up a free ticket for a 16 oz. fountain drink.
This day will not only offer an opportunity to discover the rich treasures of America and the Milwaukee Public Museum, but the museum would love to know what would make your next visit even more enjoyable and accessible.
Street parking is available to the west of the Museum on Wells Street. Parking is available for an additional charge in the Mac Arthur Square Parking structure to the north of the Museum Complex. Accessible parking spaces are located on the entry level and south side of this parking structure near the accessible entrance to the museum.
Attendees should plan to bring their own wheelchairs or other necessary mobility items, as there are a limited number of wheelchairs that may not be as readily available at the Museum on this day. A companion or attendant should accompany individuals needing assistance. Museum employees are not permitted to assist patrons with personal care.
The Museum is located at 800 W. Wells Street in downtown Milwaukee. Remember, the museum is free to Milwaukee County residents every Monday. So, join us on October 11th from 9am to 5pm and discover the rich treasures and traditions of America and the Milwaukee Public Museum. If you have any questions or have a special care or need, please feel free to contact the Museum at Voice (414) 278-2731, TTY: (414) 278-2709.
The Disabled Advisory Council of the Wisconsin DNR met on Friday, July 23, 2004 at High Cliff State Park to present awards and to tour the new accessible cabin that has been under construction on the grounds. The awards were presented to several of the DNR's property managers for the outstanding development of accessible features in their parks, as well as to several DNR staff in the Bureau of Parks, Wildlife, and Fisheries. In addition, three outside organizations, the National Chapter of Fishing Has No Boundaries, Sunset Pines Resort, and Arthur L. Miller of New Horizons Un-Limited were honored. Awards were presented by the DNR Deputy Secretary, Bill Smith, DNR Accessibility Coordinator, Dotti Krieger, and Disabled Advisory Council Chairperson, Werner Burkat.
The council invited remarks by guest speaker Art Miller, from New Horizons Un-Limited. Art Miller spoke to the concept that "nothing would change in society until the disabled found a voice." "The ADA and groups like the Advisory Council of the DNR ensure that the population is being heard." In addition, Arthur Miller and New Horizons Un-Limited contributed the plans for the new accessible cabin with the intent that the plans be used as a template for additional future accessible cabins to be built in the Wisconsin State Parks. Art Miller and NHU have contributed and supported activities advancing the disabled and the DNR's accessible "cabin in the woods" project.
Following a noon picnic and awards presentation, council members and guests toured the new accessible cabin being built at High Cliff State Park. This new accessible cabin is now completed and available for an outdoor visit by people with disabilities through mid-October and will open again in the Spring of 2005. High Cliff is located on the east side of Lake Winnebago, north of Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin. Anyone interested in renting the cabin can call High Cliff State Park at (920) 989-1106. For more information about the cabin, see our article on the cabin project in Featured Project - Cabin in the Woods - High Cliff State Park.
Over 40 participants including people with disabilities and their companions joined together through New Horizons Un-Limited in experiencing "The Quest for Immortality: Treasures of Ancient Egypt" on August 5th, 2004 at the Milwaukee Public Museum. The Museum was the Midwest's exclusive venue for this acclaimed exhibit highlighting the largest selection of Egyptian antiquities ever to travel to North America.
While admittance to this exhibit would normally have cost $21.00, through a generous grant, New Horizons Un-Limited offered the tickets exclusively to people with disabilities and their companions at a greatly reduced price.
Our NHU group gathered together at the Museum, met for lunch and a Welcome slide presentation and refreshments provided by Museum representatives. Participants also received a commemorative Quest Pin and a 10% coupon to Milwaukee Public Museum Gift Shops.
Our participants proceeded to the exhibit and enjoyed this great opportunity to be within inches of the past and more than 100 breathtaking art and funerary objects from Egypt's golden age, including coffins, death masks, relief sculptures, massive stone statuary and jewelry.
In addition participants were able to browse all the museum exhibits for the remainder of the day which included the Streets of Old Milwaukee, the Puelicher Butterfly Wing, the Third Planet, Living Oceans, the Rain Forest, Temples, Tells and Tombs, and others.
The Milwaukee Public Museum is accessible to people with disabilities. Through New Horizons' Access to Culture initiative, we plan to offer more events similar to our Quest experience. For more information about this initiative, see our Featured Project.

Instead of filling a landfill, place your used computer with an organization that is working to span the vast digital divide affecting our community members with disabilities!

June 2004 - NHU grants 30th refurbished computer
In January 2004 New Horizons Un-Limited launched our Access Technology Computer Redistribution Program for Southeastern Wisconsin residents with disabilities. Via this program we grant refurbished, Internet-ready computers to people with disabilities, who due to various barriers would not otherwise have access to this life-enriching tool.
Thanks to numerous software and hardware donations from area businesses and community members, including the Microsoft Authorized Refurbishers program and the dedication of our wonderful IT volunteers, we have recently granted our 30th refurbished computer. Each of our recipients have a plan for their new computer. Some hope to telecommute from their homes, while others, via the use of the Internet, long simply to remain in touch with the "outside world." As one applicant with Multiple Sclerosis stated, "technology access will finally get me back to the land of the living."
The enthusiasm from our computer recipients has fueled our efforts to offer computer access to our community members with disabilities. We currently have nearly 20 computers ready to donate. If you are a person with a disability or live-in caregiver with a limited income and a resident of Southeastern Wisconsin, chances are you could qualify for our program. To learn more, give us a call at (414) 299-0124 or download the Program Application.
June 2004 - NHU contributes to conceptual design for new accessible High Cliff State Park "Cabin in the Woods" in Lake Winnebago, Wisconsin!
At the end of year 2002, New Horizons Un-Limited President, Arthur Miller, gifted concept development phase drawings, electrical and mechanical engineering consultation plans to the Friends of the Wisconsin State Parks for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resouces' "Cabin in the Woods" project. NHU contributed in the conceptual design of accessibility for these plans.
This spring the "Cabin in the Woods" project broke
ground and began construction on the fifth fully accessible cabin for the Wisconsin State Parks at High Cliff State Park, Lake Winnebago, Wisconsin! This significant contribution by Arthur Miller and New Horizons Un-Limited of time and services by developing new and updated building plans for the "Cabin in the Woods" project has resulted not only
in the construction of the fifth accessible cabin at High Cliff, but these plans will be valuable for any future "Cabin in the Woods" projects in the Wisconsin state parks in the years to come.
Included in the donation was concept development phase architectural drawings and structural consultation work from Lavern Nall, President of Strass-Maguire & Associates, Inc. We made the donation through the Friends of Wisconsin State Parks.
We recognize that our gift will be used to provide valuable access for people with disabilities to our Wisconsin State Parks. We applaud and support the Friends of Wisconsin State Parks and the Department of Natural Resources in continuing this wonderful program to provide people with disabilities the opportunity to participate in the enjoyment of the natural resources of our state.
Dotti Krieger, Accessibility Coordinator for the Wisconsin DNR, attributes the success of the cabin project to the residents of Wisconsin who have made the cabins a reality through their generous donations with gifts of building funds, building plans, furniture, equipment, time and talent in the building of the cabins. The High Cliff Project can still benefit from your support.
Final furnishings are still needed. To participate, contact Dotti Krieger, DNR Accessibility Coordinator at (608)267-7490 or the High Cliff State Park Manager, Joe Hennlich, at (920) 989-1106.
Final completion of the High Cliff Cabin is planned for August 2004. For more information on this High Cliff Cabin project, see Featured Project - Cabin in the Woods - High Cliff State Park.
This summer, we are once again seeking to offer our computer workshops in collaboration with area disability organizations and residential apartment complexes. Recognizing the transportation barriers that people with disabilities face, this rather unique program eliminates the struggle to find reliable transportation by bringing the technology, the curriculum and the instructors to people with disabilitites to a common area of their apartment complex.
Via our workshops, residents are given the opportunity to learn more about computer and Internet technology in a familiar, relaxed environment. Workshops are offered on weekday mornings, afternoons and early evenings and cost just $5.00 per student per one-hour session. Some of the workshop topics include: Introduction to Computers, Word Processing, or the Internet. We can customize the topic based on the specific needs of our workshop participants.
If you would like to participate in our traveling computer workshops, please give us a call at (414) 299-0124 or write to us via e-mail at horizons@new-horizons.org.
We have expanded our topics to include a section on Arts and Culture! We are encouraging people with disabilities to venture forth into their community and enjoy the arts and culture opportunities available! We also are encouraging museums, arts and culture opportunities to be more welcoming to people with disabilities. If you offer an arts and culture opportunity for people with disabilities, we would like to share your ideas on how you are welcoming people with disabilities!! If you are a person with a disability, we encourage you to check out our new topic.
Enjoy Arts and Culture in your community!!
Thank you to all of the individuals, businesses and organizations that kindly donated items for use in our raffle and silent auction. A special thank you to all of our volunteers - without you this event would not have been possible. A thank you to all the individuals who sold and purchased tickets in support of New Horizons Un-Limited. Our second raffle and silent auction was a great success in raising funds for our community initiatives and raising awareness of our programs for people with disabilities. There are no words to express our appreciation!
Please visit our Raffle and Silent Auction Donor Page and join us in thanking them for their generosity and support.
Here at NHU, our volunteers have been working very hard cleaning and refurbishing used computers for individuals with disabilities. Our first recipients of our Access Technology Initiative Individual Giving Program have begun to pick up their computers. If you are disabled and would like the opportunity to have a used computer equipped for access to the Internet, please contact us.
Contact us today via e-mail at horizons@new-horizons.org or via phone at 414.299.0124 to learn more!
If you have an "old" computer that's been collecting dust - we can revive it and put it to good use in our local community. All donated equipment will either be used for the training of people with disabilities, given to other non-profit organizations interested in training people with disabilities or will be given directly to people with disabilities for their personal home use. A practical solution to a growing need!
Instead of filling a landfill, place your used computer where it can provide a bridge across the digital divide!
