July 2002 - Disability movement loses its leader
A Tribute to Justin Dart
1930-2002
Justin Dart, Jr., "the father of the Americans with Disabilities Act" and leader of the international disability rights movement died Saturday, June 22, 2002 at his home in Washington D.C. He was 71 years old. Dart, a renowned human rights activist, led the disability rights movement for three decades. He had been the recipient of five presidential appointments and countless honors, including an appointment in 1981 to the National Council on Disability as the vice-chair, an appointment in 1989 as chair of the President's Committee on the Employment of People with Disabilities, the receipt of the Hubert Humphrey Award of the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights and the receipt of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian award.
In the end, Dart called for "solidarity among all who love justice, all who love life, to create a revolution that will empower every single human being to govern his or her life, to govern the society and to be fully productive of life quality for self and for all." In his final words, he asked for all those impassioned towards the realization of freedom and human rights to "Lead on! Lead on!" Let us all be soldiers in this revolution and complete the work to which Justin Dart so dedicated his life.
June 2002 - NHU seeking input from disability community on Life Planning
We are in the process of developing a series of Life Planning guides in which we hope to provide an introduction to the issues involved in the process of planning for the future of a family member with a disability. The guides will focus on preparing for the transitions that all people must make throughout their lives. Such transitions include infancy to childhood, childhood (school-age) to adolescence, and adolescence to adulthood and beyond.
In order that we may provide the most comprehensive and true-to-life series of guides, we need your input and expertise. If you have information or resources concerning Life Planning we want to hear from you. Please share you expertise so that we may all learn from your experiences. If we each give a little and take a little, the collective sharing of knowledge would make a significant difference for all of us.
Please contact us with your Life Planning experiences by e-mailing horizons@new-horizons.org.
